XeS- Ciao Mauro e grazie e per avermi invitato a partecipare a questa
rubrica sul tuo blog. Venendo alla tua domanda. Proprio perché sono
“in giro” da oltre 20 anni nell’ambiente, sinceramente mi sono
stancato di rispondere periodicamente al perché in Italia non ci sia
una vera scena. I motivi sono sempre gli stessi: Mancanza di unione
di intenti, invidie, mancanza di etichette autoctone che abbiano
voluto investire sul prodotto Italiano o che non hanno saputo
valorizzare abbastanza quello che avevano, sciacallaggio abnorme di
alcuni sedicenti promoter che hanno affossato l’immagine
dell’Italia in Europa e nel resto del mondo (mi vien da pensare ad
un festival nel Napoletano, con il promoter che dopo il primo giorno
scappò con gli incassi della serata senza pagare le band, ed erano
band di livello internazionale), band che dopo mezzo demo se la
tirano manco avessero inventato qualcosa di unico, ma che poi dopo
qualche mese spariscono nel nulla. E quello che ottengono è solo il
risultato di saturare il mercato. Potrei continuare per molto, ma
come detto sopra, mi sono stancato e ormai sono vecchio per farmi il
sangue amaro. In ambito black c’è stato più di un tentativo di
creare una scena, mi vien in mente la Black Metal Invitta Armata o la
Scena Italica del nostro buon amico Hesperus. Alla fine, però, non è
stato nulla che è durato nel tempo. Fortunatamente ci sono band di
grande livello in Italia, band che ormai sono diventate un pilastro
della scena metal mondiale e che raccolgono molti proseliti, a
prescindere dai miei gusti personali. Quindi un brindisi a queste
band, storiche o nuove, che tengono alto il nome dell’Italia in
ambito metal.
UZ-Da
poco con gli Infernal Angels, avete firmato un nuovo deal, ce ne vuoi
parlare? DETTAGLI, per quanto possibile. E cosa pensi della
discografia attuale in generale? Senza peli sulla lingua, mi
raccomando!
XeS- Abbiamo firmato a gennaio per l’etichetta Belga “Immortal Frost
Productions”. Dopo tanti anni insieme alla My Kingdom Music di
Francesco, che avrà sempre la mia più grande stima per quello che
ha fatto per noi, era il momento di fare un ulteriore step. Firmare
per la Immortal, che nel suo Roster ha band del calibro di Azaghal,
Frostmoon Eclipse, Corpus Christii, Liber Null, Infinity, Psychonaut4
e altre grandissime band, è stato per noi un grandissimo premio alla
nostra perseveranza e alla crescita che avvenuta specialmente nel
periodo post covid, grazie anche all’ingresso di Asdraeth e
Postmortem in formazione. Essendo poi una label che si dedica
interamente al black metal in tutte le sue forme, per noi è stata
davvero una grande soddisfazione approdare sotto la sua ala. Però
non deve essere un punto di arrivo, ma bensì un punto di lancio,
qualcosa che ci faccia alzare l’asticella delle nostre performance,
che siano in studio o live. Surtur ci sta seguendo in ogni dettaglio
della vita della band, lavora in maniera scrupolosa e maniacale sotto
ogni aspetto. Diciamo che ci ha stravolto il modo in cui gestire la
band. E’un grosso impegno, ma lavorare con lui è davvero un gran
piacere. Stiamo preparando il nuovo album, stiamo lavorando ad ogni
minimo particolare per entrare in studio a fine marzo nelle
condizioni perfette per fare un disco che sia curato in ogni
dettaglio. Avremo anche degli ospiti, che verranno svelati più
avanti. Ti assicuro che sarà una produzione che eleverà di molto il
nostro livello, perché stiamo lavorando per quello: migliorarci. Per
quanto riguarda invece l’attuale mercato discografico, ribadisco il
mio pensiero. Troppe band. Il mercato è saturo ed è difficile stare
dietro a tutte le uscite, sia per gli addetti ai lavori che a chi
invece ascolta. E’ una situazione molto precaria, Molte band hanno
subito un duro contraccolpo dal covid prima e ora dalla crisi
finanziaria dovuta alla guerra Ucraina. Perché di dischi se ne
vendono pochi e il sostentamento principale per molte band è
l’attività live. Quindi prima il covid che ha impedito alle band
di esibirsi e ora l’aumento dei prezzi, che ha fatto si che molte
band si trovassero a fare i conti con dei costi che in programma
erano meno della metà, stanno minando ancor di più il settore.
Sinceramente, specialmente nel metal, credo che il sistema sia molto
vicino al collasso. Ma non sono un economista, quindi non mi voglio
lanciare in previsioni. Dico solo che è un momento molto delicato,
un valico molto difficile da attraversare. Per attraversarlo c’è
bisogno che tutti si spinga dalla stessa parte, dagli addetti ai
lavori a chi invece usufruisce del prodotto finito.
UZ-Hai
avuto ed hai moltissimi impegni e progetti, cosa ti piacerebbe ancora
fare che magari non hai fatto? Musicalmente, live...a ruota libera!
XeS- Forse ne ho avuti troppi ahhahah. A parte gli scherzi vorrei
riprendere il discorso lasciato con i Byblis dopo l’uscita del
primo full. Vorrei portare live almeno una volta i Deathcvlt (Mauro
ne sai qualcosa?)(giusto qualcosina...ma la soluzione la conosci, da tempo te l'ho indicata e ne sarei immensamente fiero NRD) e vorrei portare live anche il progetto Intus
Mortem. A proposito di Intus Mortem non appena avrò del tempo da
dedicarci e anche Noktvrnal vorrà, vorrei dare un seguito ad Exiled
From Light.
UZ-A
proposito di live, hai girato in lungo e largo per l'Europa, come ti
sei trovato a collaborare con band estere e contesti nuovi?
XeS- La collaborazione con altre band dipende sempre dal modo in cui uno
si pone. Noi abbiamo sempre cercato di essere collaborativi con
tutti, di porci sempre in maniera umile e abbiamo ricevuto sempre dei
trattamenti ottimi. Nel tour della scorsa primavera, organizzato da
Alessio della Etrurian Legion, che ha toccato Balcani ed Est Europa è
stato davvero eccezionale per la grande risposta di pubblico. Da
quelle parti sono davvero partecipi e fuori di testa. Supportano ogni
secondo del live e ne scaturisce una energia pazzesca. Poi con i
Nihilo, band svizzera death metal tritaossa, con cui abbiamo
intrapreso il tour, è nata una grandissima amicizia. A giugno saremo
loro ospiti in Svizzera per un live e non vediamo l’ora.
UZ-Finiamo
col botto: so che avresti sempre voluto aprire una tua etichetta.
Cosa ti piacerebbe proporre alle band, come proporti ad una stampa
sempre più chiusa ai quattro nomi, e cosa ti fa desistere ogni
maledetto giorno?
XeS- Vero ho sempre sperato di aprire una etichetta. Una di quelle
etichette che nascono per il gusto personale di proporre band che
apprezzi e che magari invece hanno poco spazio, tornado al discorso
di prima, perché il mercato è saturo. Non so cosa proporrei alle
band, il mondo discografico è diventato così difficile, che davvero
non ho idea di quello che potrei proporre. Anche perché sono
realista e non mi piacerebbe prendere in giro le band. Ormai tutto si
muove sui social e le piattaforme tipo Spotify, Bandcamp ecc, quindi
sinceramente non mi scervellerei per trovare un modo per propormi
alla “stampa”. Oggi bisogna concentrarsi sulle interazioni dei
social, ormai contano le visualizzazioni o i followers (che puoi
anche comprare) e non la qualità effettiva del prodotto. Conta se
fai parlare di te, non importa in che modo e proprio questi motivi
che ti sto elencando e che sono il “fulcro” del nuovo modo di
proporsi, che mi fanno desistere dal tentare.
UZ- Che dire, sempre dritto al punto.

Hi, Beasts!!!
This time we have one of the old guards
of Italian Extreme Metal, leader of the historic blackster INFERNAL
ANGELS, and member of an infinite number of other projects and
involvements, including Byblis, Intus Mortem, Lamashtu, Boa, Lylium, and of course the massacre that sees him involved together with my
person, Deathcvlt, a source of great satisfaction and pride.
Let
the trumpets ring, "triccheballacche and caccavelle", in honor of
XeS!!!
A person who, in addition to being all of those as mentioned earlier, is above all a Friend, someone with whom discussion
is always on the agenda, and growth with it, someone who welcomes you
into their home like the best of brothers, someone who is there
stainless (and very bad ... few will understand this).
And one of
the people from the Black Metal culture in primis, but also from
music in general, the broadest that I know.

UZ- Let's start with a blast Massi:
you've been on the scene for decades, I think almost 3; What really
doesn't make us Italians capable of creating even a vaguely credible
scene? There are good bands...but we always end up with projects that
fall into the cosmic sidereal void!!!
XeS- Hi Mauro and thank you and for
inviting me to participate in this section on your blog. Coming to
your question. Precisely because I've been "around" for
over 20 years in the scene, I honestly got tired of periodically
answering why there isn't a real scene in Italy. The reasons are
always the same: Lack of unity of purpose, envy, lack of native
labels that wanted to invest in Italian products or that didn't know
how to make the most of what they had, abnormal profiteering by some
self-styled promoters who scuttled the image of the 'Italy in Europe
and in the rest of the world (it makes me think of a festival in the
Neapolitan area, with the promoter who after the first day ran away
with the proceeds of the evening without paying the bands, and they
were bands of international level), bands that after half demos if
they pull it as if they had invented something unique, but which then
after a few months disappear into thin air. And what they get is just
the result of saturating the market. I could go on for a long time,
but as mentioned above, I'm tired and now I'm old to make my blood
bitter. In the black field, there has been more than one attempt to
create a scene, the Black Metal Invitta Armata or the Italic Scene of
our good friend Hesperus comes to mind. In the end, though, it wasn't
anything that lasted. Luckily there are high-level bands in Italy,
bands that have now become a pillar of the world metal scene and that
gather many converts, regardless of my personal tastes. So a toast to
these bands, historic or new, who keep up the name of Italy in the
metal field.
UZ-You recently signed a new deal with
the Infernal Angels, do you want to tell us about it? DETAILS as much
as possible. And what do you think of the current discography in
general? Outspoken, please!
XeS- We signed in January for the
Belgian label “Immortal Frost Productions”. After so many years
together with Francesco's My Kingdom Music, who will always have my
highest esteem for what he has done for us, it was time to take
another step. Signing for Immortal, which has bands of the caliber of
Azaghal, Frostmoon Eclipse, Corpus Christii, Liber Null, Infinity,
Psychonaut4, and other great bands in its roster, has been a great
reward for us for our perseverance and for the growth that has
occurred especially in post covid period, thanks also to the entry of
Asdraeth and Postmortem in training. Being then a label that is
entirely dedicated to black metal in all its forms, it was really a
great satisfaction for us to land under his wing. But it doesn't have
to be an arrival point, but rather a launching point, something that
makes us raise the bar of our performances, whether they are in the
studio or live. Surtur is following us in every detail of the life of
the band, he works scrupulously and obsessively in every aspect.
Let's say that he changed the way we manage the band. It is a big
commitment, but working with him is really a great pleasure. We're
preparing the new album, and we're working on every little detail to
enter the studio at the end of March in the perfect conditions to
make a record that's taken care of in every detail. We will also have
guests, who will be revealed later. I assure you that it will be a
production that will greatly raise our level because that's what
we're working on: improving ourselves. As far as the current record
market is concerned, I reiterate my thoughts. Too many bands. The
market is saturated and it is difficult to keep up with all the
releases, both for insiders and for those who listen. It is a very
precarious situation, Many bands have suffered a severe backlash from
the covid before and now from the financial crisis due to the
Ukrainian war. Because few records are sold and the main livelihood
for many bands is live activity. So first covid prevented
the bands from performing and now the increase in prices, which meant
that many bands had to deal with costs that were less than half the
planned costs, are undermining the sector even more. Honestly,
especially in metal, I think the system is very close to collapse.
But I'm not an economist, so I don't want to start forecasting. I'm
just saying it's a very delicate moment, a very difficult pass to
cross. To cross it, everyone needs to push on the same side, from
insiders to those who instead use the finished product.
UZ-You had and still have many
commitments and projects, what would you still like to do that maybe
you haven't done yet? Musically, live...freewheeling!
XeS- Maybe I had too many ahhahah.
Joking aside, I would like to resume the discussion left with the
Byblis after the release of the first full house. I'd like to bring
Deathcvlt live at least once (Mauro, do you know anything about it?)
(just a little bit...but you know the solution, I've indicated it to
you for a long time and I'd be immensely proud of it NRD) and I'd
like to bring the Intus Mortem project live too . Speaking of Intus
Mortem as soon as I have some time to devote to it and Noktvrnal will
too, I would like to follow up on Exiled From Light.
UZ-Speaking of live performances,
you've toured far and wide across Europe, how did you find yourself
collaborating with foreign bands and new contexts?
XeS- Collaboration with other bands
always depends on one's attitude. We have always tried to be
collaborative with everyone, to always be humble and we have always
received excellent treatment. In last spring's tour, organized by
Alessio of the Etrurian Legion, which touched the Balkans and Eastern
Europe, he was truly exceptional due to the great response from the
public. Over there they are really involved and out of their minds.
They support every second of live and crazy energy comes out of
it. Then with Nihilo, the Swiss "bonesmasher" death metal band, with
whom we embarked on the tour, a great friendship was born. In June we
will be their guests in Switzerland for a live and we can't wait.
UZ-Let's finish with a bang: I know you
always wanted to open your own label. What would you like to propose
to the bands, how to present yourself to a press that is increasingly
close to the four names, and what makes you give up every bloody
day?
XeS- True I've always hoped to open a
label. One of those labels that are born for the personal taste of
proposing bands that you appreciate and that perhaps have little
space instead, returning to the discussion above, because the market
is saturated. I don't know what I would propose to bands, the
recording world has become so difficult, that I really have no idea
what I could propose. Also because I'm realistic and I wouldn't like
to make fun of bands. By now everything moves on social networks and
platforms such as Spotify, Bandcamp etc, so I honestly wouldn't rack
my brain to find a way to present myself to the "press".
Today we need to focus on social media interactions, now views or
followers (which you can also buy) count and not the actual quality
of the product. It matters if you get people talking about you, it
doesn't matter in what way and it is precisely these reasons that I
am listing you and which are the "core" of the new way of
proposing, which make me desist from trying.
