Stavolta parliamo di un mio carissimo collega ed amico, Damiano Paoloni del Sound Distillery studio presso Castelfidardo (AN).
Nonostante apparteniamo letteralmente a mondi diversi, la mia stima presso di lui è assolutamente solida come una roccia e sconfinata come il Void universale.
Persona pacata e disponibile come pochi, di rara competenza ed impegno nella causa dell'audio di QUELLO BUONO!

UZ-Sappiamo che hai completamente rimesso a nuovo il Sound Destillery Studio. Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci?

DP-Prima di tutto.....grazie per l'intervista, é un vero piacere fare 2 chiacchiere virtuali nel tuo blog!!!

Sí, in realtá, i lavori in studio sono ancora in corso d'opera.......sarebbe un sogno poter parlare al passato!!!!!

Il progetto del "nuovo" studio nacque qualche anno fa, quando decisi di sfruttare lo spazio libero nel vecchio stabilimento della ditta di famiglia. 

Il target é quello di creare non uno studio "personale" (e per personale intendo un luogo dove lavoro solo io), ma uno studio commerciale da affittare a producers e fonici oltre che.....ovviamente.....lavorarci anche io.

Non sto quí ad assillarvi con notizioni tecniche....la nuova struttura sará composta da 7 sale di ripresa con acustica diversa (3 main rooms e 4 relativi iso booths), comunicanti tra loro sia audio che video, e una regia progettata per, e che ospita un sistema Dolby Atmos, oltre ai classici ascolti stereo. Il fiore all'occhiello sará una recording room di quasi 310 mq, alta 8.5m. Non vedo l'ora di suonare lí una batteria !!!!

Ció permetterà di lavorare anche con orchestre, big bands e tutto ció che ruota intorno allo scoring cinematografico, audio per film e serie tv.

UZ-Sei un fan del buon vecchio hardware, di quello bello caratterizzante.

Hai qualche piccolo "tips&tricks" da poterci consigliare o svelare?

Se dovessi consigliare qualche buon plugin, cosa ci indicheresti?

DP-Assolutamente. Sono un amante dell'analogico. Ma vorrei anche dire che non sono un "fondamentalista analogico", passami il termine!!! Non sono uno di quelli che pensa che l'analogico sia il bene assoluto e il digitale sia il male supremo!!!! Entrambi sono dei mezzi per arrivare al risultato....mix o master che sia......ed ognuno deve utilizzare ció che ritiene dia il risultato migliore!!!!

La cosa che reputo poco professionale é lavorare con i presets. Ogni band/artista merita di aver un sound personale e quanto piú unico possibile. E l'uso dei presets cozza un pó con questa mia visione.

Per quanto riguarda "tips&tricks"......ogni situazione richiede un trattamento a sé. Dovendo proprio dire una cosa che uso nel 99.9% dei casi, é il bus compressor del banco SSL seguito dal Manley Massive Passive. Mi piace il glue e il punch del SSL e le alte frequenze brillanti ma morbide del massive passive.

Per quanto riguarda il mondo plug-in, dovendo sceglierne 1.........brainworx SSL G channel. Ovviamente non é uguale al hardware, ma, a mio avviso, suona molto bene!!!!

UZ-Sei un batterista, di quelli seri non poco, come deve essere per te una batteria?

Sia come strumento (caratteristiche) che in fase di recordings?

DP-Grazie Mauro, apprezzo che mi tieni in considerazione anche come batterista. Grazie davvero!!!!!

Come deve essere una batteria per me.....beh, sicuramente prediligo uno strumento dal suono aperto, risonante e con la "nota", rispetto ad una batteria piú chiusa o con tanto attacco. Anche se sono fermamente convinto che gran parte del suono lo fa il cervello e la mano del musicista.

In fase di registrazione tendo a mettere da parte i gusti personali e faccio in modo di allineare il sound dello strumento al tipo di produzione.

Altra cosa alla quale faccio particolarmente attenzione é l'accordatura. É una mia fissa, lo ammetto!!!!😁😁😁😁

UZ-Hai mai pensato di rimetterti in gioco col Metal, magari di quello bello peso? (eh son un estremista, non posso evitare certe domande)

DP-L'ultima produzione a cui ho preso parte anche come batterista, oltre che fonico, é stata.........METAL!!!!

Anche se questo genere é abbastanza distante da ció che studio/suono quotidianamente, la seconda cassa della batteria é sempre pronta all'uso!!!! 

Scherzi a parte, registrare parti metal non troppo estreme, quando capita, lo faccio. Rimettermi in gioco e prendere parte ad una band, sinceramente, non é nei miei piani!!!!

UZ-Domanda bastarda: cosa proprio non va in Italia, che non ci permettere non dico di essere competitivi, ma anche solo di avere una credibilità a livello internazionale?

DP-Questa, Mauro, é veramente difficile da rispondere..........

Secondo me per essere credibili a livello internazionale, si deve cambiare in Italia il concetto di "musica".

Purtroppo, nel nostro paese, la musica non é sempre vista come un vero e proprio lavoro e non sempre é presa seriamente. Tante persone pensano che sia un hobby o semplicemente un contorno. Finché avremo questa mentalitá, faremo fatica ad essere competitivi.

UZ-We knows you have entirely refurbished the Sound Distillery Studio. What should we expect?

Projects, ideas, ambitions?

DP-First of all.....thanks for the interview, it's a real pleasure to have a virtual chat on your blog!!!

Yes, actually, the work in the studio is still in progress.......it would be a dream to be able to speak in the past tense!!!!!

The "new" studio project was born a few years ago when I decided to exploit the free space in the old factory of the family firm.

The target is to create not a "personal" studio (and by personal I mean a place where only I work), but a commercial studio to be rented to producers and sound engineers as well as.....obviously.....work there too!!!.

I'm not here to pester you with technical notions .... the new structure will be composed of 7 recording rooms with different acoustics (3 main rooms and 4 related iso booths), communicating with each other both audio and video, and a control room designed to, and which houses a Dolby Atmos system, in addition to the classic stereo listening. The flagship will be a recording room of almost 310 square meters, 8.5m high. Can't wait to play drums there!!!!

This will also allow you to work with orchestras, big bands, and everything that revolves around film scoring, audio for films, and TV series.

UZ-Are you a fan of the good old hardware, the cool characterizing one.

Do you have any little "tips&tricks" you can recommend or reveal?

If you had to recommend any good plugins, what would you recommend?

DP-Absolutely. I am an analog lover. But I would also like to say that I'm not an "analog fundamentalist", pass me the term!!! I'm not one of those who think that analog is the absolute good and digital is the ultimate evil!!!! Both are means to get to the result.... mix or master it is...... and everyone must use what they think gives the best result!!!!

The thing I find unprofessional is working with presets. Every band/artist deserves to have a personal and unique sound possible. And the use of presets clashes a bit with my vision.

As for "tips&tricks"......each situation requires its own treatment. Having to say one thing that I use in 99.9% of the cases, it's the SSL desk bus compressor followed by the Manley Massive Passive. UZ-Are you a drummer, one of the "top range" ones, how should a drum kit be for you?

Both as an instrument (features) and in the recording phase?

What drums should be like for me..... well, I certainly prefer an instrument with an open, resonant sound and with a "note", compared to a drum that is more closed or with a lot of attack. Although I firmly believe that a large part of the sound is made by the musician's brain and hand.

During the recording phase, I tend to put personal tastes aside and I make sure to align the sound of the instrument to the type of production.

Another thing I pay particular attention to is tuning. It's my thing, I admit it!!!!😁😁😁😁

UZ-Have you ever thought about getting back into the game with Metal, maybe the fast&blast one? (eh I'm an extremist, I can't avoid certain questions)

DP-The last production in which I took part also as a drummer, as well as a sound engineer, was.........METAL!!!!

Even if this genre is quite distant from what I study/play on a daily basis, the second bass drum is always ready for use!!!!

Seriously, recording not too-extreme metal parts, when it happens, I do it. Getting back in the game and taking part in a band, frankly, is not in my plans!!!!

UZ-Bastard question: what is really wrong in Italy, that it doesn't allow us not to be competitive, but also just to have credibility at an international level?

DP-This, Mauro, is really difficult to answer.........

In my opinion, to be credible on an international level, the concept of "music" must be changed in Italy.

Unfortunately, in our country, music is not always seen as a real job and is not always taken seriously. A lot of people think it's a hobby or just a side dish. As long as we have this mentality, we will struggle to be competitive.
