Conosciuto inizialmente perché mi sono appassionato a questo brand che all'epoca aveva solo commercializzato il preamp per la serie 500, quel P1 davvero innovativo, con la possibilità di modifica...ISTANTANEA!!!

Alla fine, mi decido a contattare il boss di BD, Francesco, per sottoporgli l'idea di "5 Stabs with..." .
Ci sentiamo prima telefonicamente, ed ho modo di conoscere una persona davvero spettacolare, appassionato di hardware certo, ma non solo.
Tocchiamo argomenti che vanno dall'Arte, alla situazione lavorativa professionale di chi si ingegna a creare qualcosa di nuovo, chicche a non finire (faccio un solo nome: TRIDENT).
Passiamo qualcosa tipo 2 ore al telefono.

Ci lasciamo oltre con il proposito dell'intervista, anche con quello di beccarsi "dal vivo" prima o poi per...almeno farsi una bella mangiata!

UZ-Cominciamo subito col botto Francesco.

Esattamente, come cappero ti è venuto in mente di lanciarti in questa follia?
BD-Ciao Ulag, prima di scendere nei dettagli vorrei ringraziarti per avermi coinvolto in questa tua iniziativa, è un piacere ed un onore essere tuo ospite e fare una chiacchierata insieme.
Venendo alla tua domanda, eh... è una lunga storia...diciamo che da amante della musica ho sempre avuto il pallino per la registrazione e la produzione musicale, un interesse che mi ha portato da suonare in band locali a lavorare in studio di registrazione, per poi finire a costruirmi da solo vari aggeggi per acquisire e processare il suono. Da qui ho voluto approfondire questa mia passione con una pazzia, andando a studiare ingegneria elettronica in Inghilterra perché per me i migliori costruttori degli anni 70/80 erano tutti là e volevo vedere cosa facevano, come lavoravano. E cosi è stato,...ho finito l’Università, ho lavorato per alcune aziende ben conosciute nel settore pro audio, mi sono divertito, conosciuto ambienti e persone molto interessanti, ma poi la mancanza dell'Italia iniziava a farsi sentire e anche se a livello professionale, per ciò che piaceva fare a me, la vedevo come un passo indietro, ho comunque deciso di tornare.
Una volta rientrato in Italia il passo è stato breve, non potevo stare senza incanalare la mia creatività, le mie idee e i miei approcci dentro qualche design di audio e perciò ho deciso di fondare la Bad Dogs.
UZ-La cosa che davvero è da apprezzare della tua produzione, è la ricerca ed innovazione.
Basta pensare ai preamp, allo Spider.
Ed il Cargo, pur non "inventandosi nulla" ha comunque messo a disposizione una feature non di poco.
Come nasce un tuo progetto di lavoro che poi porta alla messa in commercio di un nuovo prodotto?
BD-Come ti dicevo prima, il motore alla base di questa mia scelta è la musica, quindi nell'ideazione di un nuovo dispositivo cerco sempre di partire da un qualcosa che vorrei per me, che risulti utile al mio workflow quando registro o mixo qualcosa, cosa che ahimè faccio sempre con minore frequenza, ma non per questo è lontana dal mio vivere quotidiano.
Inoltre, sono sempre aperto a nuove idee e mi piace molto interagire con persone che come me hanno questa passione o che come nel tuo caso sono fonici di professione, questo mi permette di capire come ottimizzare sia il processo produttivo, per quanto riguarda la mia musica, sia l'indagine e la proposta di soluzioni che mancano sul mercato o che possono apportare dei vantaggi per chi le usa.
UZ-Domanda facile...ma impegnativa: hai mai pensato di lavorare su ordinazione?
Del tipo un cliente ti chiede determinati parametri di una macchina e tu gliela realizzi?
Quali pensi siano i principali ostacoli, oltre al quello economico (per chi legge, OVVIAMENTE non si può fare una macchina da studio con 300€...)?
Si, questa cosa interessa anche a me eheheheh
BD-Eeheh, questo è un argomento che mi è stato proposto più volte.... ma non è un modello di business che mi appartiene e perciò preferisco non farlo perché' la verità è che non mi divertirei.
E' lo stesso motivo per cui non faccio cloni, non mi danno soddisfazione. So che sotto il profilo degli affari hanno il loro dannato senso, ma a me piace progettare cose nuove in cui metterci la testa e risolvere le sfide che si presentano via via.
Più volentieri preferisco parlare insieme di una nuova idea o di qualcosa di particolare e vedere se può essere realizzato in più larga quantità perché fare un pezzo unico, a parte il fatto che come hai accennato tu costerebbe davvero tanto, non apporta vantaggi generali alle persone. A me piace fare dispositivi professionali che la gente può usare, farci musica, liberare le loro pulsioni artistiche...a volte il pezzo unico è più un vezzo dei nostri tempi che una soluzione a lungo termine.
UZ-So che hai lavorato diverso tempo all'estero: quali differenze a livello lavorativo hai riscontrato?
BD-Si, come accennavo prima ho lavorato vari anni in Inghilterra e devo dire che lavorativamente mi sono trovato sempre molto bene. Fare un paragone con l'Italia è difficile perché ogni situazione lavorativa è diversa da ogni altra e il più delle volte sono le persone che lavorano con te che fanno la differenza nella tua percezione del lavoro. Detto questo, per quanto mi riguarda, la differenza più importante che ho vissuto è probabilmente il coinvolgimento. Mi spiego meglio. Ho notato che in Italia spesso la gestione delle risorse umane è lasciata un po' a se stessa ed è richiesto una grande dose di iniziativa personale, quindi magari il carattere di una persona impatta molto nel suo percorso professionale, mentre in Inghilterra c’è un coinvolgimento maggiore da parte del management ed una gestione più capillare delle persone all'interno di un gruppo lavorativo che ti permettono di crescere in ogni caso.
UZ-Chiudiamo forse un po' banalmente: cosa si prospetta per il futuro?
E cosa davvero, potendo, vorresti migliorare?
BD-Per il futuro ho tante idee, ma alcune non credo siano realizzabili nel breve medio termine :) Diciamo che per quanto riguarda i prodotti posso dire che quest'anno uscirà un attenuatore bilanciato passivo a due canali e più tardi nell'anno un compressore serie 500 atipico e molto interessante...
Se potessi migliorare, più che nei componenti e design vorrei migliorare nella gestione delle attività e della supply chain perché il tempo e le risorse ci sono nemiche :)

How can you not appreciate such a person?

UZ-Let's start immediately with a bang Francesco.
You produce studio audio equipment...in Italy.
How exactly did you come up with the idea of throwing yourself into this madness?
BD-Hi Ulag, before going into details I would like to thank you for having involved me in your initiative, it is a pleasure and an honor to be your guest and have a chat together.
Coming to your question, eh... it's a long story... let's say that as a music lover, I've always had a passion for recording and music production. This interest has led me from playing in local bands to working in the studio recording, and then end up building my own various gadgets to capture and process the sound. From here I madly wanted to deepen this passion of mine, going to study electronic engineering in England because for me the best manufacturers of the 70s/80s were all there and I wanted to see what they did, and how they worked. And so it was,... I finished University, and I worked for some well-known companies in the pro audio sector, I had fun, and met very interesting environments and people, but then the lack of Italy began to be felt, and also if on a professional level, for what I liked to do, I saw it as a step backward, I still decided to go back.
Once back in Italy, the step was short, I couldn't stay without channeling my creativity, my ideas, and my approaches into some audio design and therefore I decided to found Bad Dogs.
UZ-The thing that is really to be appreciated about your production is research and innovation.
Just think of the preamps, the Spider.
And the Cargo, while not "inventing anything" has nevertheless made available a significant feature.
How is your work project born which then leads to the marketing of a new product?
BD-As I told you before, the engine behind this choice of mine is music, so when designing a new device I always try to start from something that I would like for me, which is useful for my workflow when I record or mix something, which alas I always do less frequently, but it is not for this reason far from my daily life.
Furthermore, I am always open to new ideas and I really like interacting with people who like me have this passion or who, like in your case, are professional sound engineers, this allows me to understand how to optimize both the production process, as regards my music, both the investigation and the proposal of solutions that are missing on the market or that can bring advantages for those who use them.
UZ-Easy...but challenging question: have you ever thought about working to order?
Like a customer asks you for certain parameters of a machine and you make it for him?
What do you think are the main obstacles, besides the economic one (for the reader, OBVIOUSLY you can't make studio hardware with €300...)?

BD-Eeheh, this is a topic that has been proposed to me several times.... but it's not a business model that belongs to me and therefore I prefer not to do it because the truth is that I wouldn't enjoy it.
It's the same reason why I don't make clones, they don't give me satisfaction. I know that from a business point of view, they make their damn sense, but I like to design new things to put my head into and solve the challenges that arise as they arise.
More willingly, I prefer to talk together about a new idea or something in particular and see if it can be made in larger quantities because making a single piece, apart from the fact that as you mentioned it would cost a lot, does not bring general benefits to people. I like to make professional devices that people can use, make music with them, and free their artistic impulses...sometimes the unique piece is more a quirk of our times than a long-term solution.
UZ-I know that you have worked abroad for some time: what differences in terms of work have you encountered?
BD-Yes, as I mentioned before, I worked for several years in England and I must say that I have always found myself working very well. Making a comparison with Italy is difficult because every working situation is different from every other and most of the time it's the people who work with you who make the difference in your perception of work. That said, as far as I'm concerned, the most important difference I've experienced is probably engagement. I'll explain. I noticed that in Italy the management of human resources is often left to itself and a large dose of personal initiative is required, therefore perhaps the character of a person has a great impact on his professional career, while in England there is a greater involvement on the part of management and more capillary management of people within a working group that allows you to grow in any case.
UZ-Let's close perhaps a little trivially: what do you expect for the future?
And what really, if you could, would you like to improve?
BD-I have many ideas for the future, but I don't think some of them are feasible in the short-medium term :) Let's say that as far as the products are concerned I can say that this year a two-channel passive balanced attenuator will be released and later in the year a compressor 500 series atypical and very interesting...
If I could improve, more than in components and design I would like to improve in the management of activities and the supply chain because time and resources are our enemies :)
